Structural Optimization of a Force Balance Using a Computational Experiment Design - Parker, P. A.
This paper proposes a new approach to force balance structural optimization featuring a computational experiment design. Currently, this multi-dimensional design process requires the designer to perform a simplification by executing parameter studies on a small subset of design variables. This one-factor-at-a-time approach varies a single variable while holding all others at a constant level. Consequently, subtle interactions among the design variables, which can be exploited to achieve the desi...

Theoretical studies of the extraterrestrial chemistry of biogenic elements and compounds - Defrees, D. J
Organic compounds, molecules related to those in living systems, are found in many different extraterrestrial environments. The study of organic astrochemistry is important to exobiology both because it demonstrates the ubiquity of processes which led to life on Earth and because the dust clouds where molecules are found are analogs of the solar nebula from which the Earth formed. In the long chain of events leading from the Big Bang, and a universe composed of atomic hydrogen and helium, to the...

Towards Time Automata and Multi-Agent Systems - Hutzler, G.
The design of reactive systems must comply with logical correctness (the system does what it is supposed to do) and timeliness (the system has to satisfy a set of temporal constraints) criteria. In this paper, we propose a global approach for the design of adaptive reactive systems, i.e., systems that dynamically adapt their architecture depending on the context. We use the timed automata formalism for the design of the agents' behavior...

A user's manual for a one dimensional thermal model to predict the temperature profiles of a deep body of water for any number of annual cycles is presented. The model is essentially a set of partial differential equations which are solved by finite difference methods using a high speed digital computer. The model features the effects of area change with depth, nonlinear interaction of wind generated turbulence and buoyancy, adsorption of radiative heat flux below the surface, thermal discharges...

Sensitivity of reflector backup structure weight to variable wind speed loadings - Levy, R.
Backup structures for paraboloidal reflectors were designed for three diameters to support combinations of gravity, seismic, wind or snow loads. Changes in structure weights were determined as a function of change in wind speed. Low wind speeds were found to have only minor influence on weight, and extremely high hurricane type wind speeds had only a moderate effect on the weight. One of the backup structure designs was evaluated for performance and judged to be satisfactory for use either as a ...

The 4-Day Wave as Observed from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite Microwave Limb Sounder - Allen, D. R.
The ''4-day wave'' is an eastward moving quasi-nondispersive feature with period near 4 days occurring near the winter polar stratopause. This paper presents evidence of the 4-day feature in Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) temperature, geopotential height, and ozone data from the late southern winters of 1992 and 1993. Space-time spectral analyses reveal a double-peaked temperature structure consisting of one peak near the stratopause and another in the lower mesosphere, with an out-of-phase relati...

This document outlines the user's responsibilities and provides security and control guidelines to be implemented. These protective measures include: (1) protect user area; (2) protect user password; (3) protect user files; (4) back up...

Contingency Planning for Planetary Rovers - Dearden, Richard
There has been considerable work in AI on planning under uncertainty. But this work generally assumes an extremely simple model of action that does not consider continuous time and resources. These assumptions are not reasonable for a Mars rover, which must cope with uncertainty about the duration of tasks, the power required, the data storage necessary, along with its position and orientation. In this paper, we outline an approach to generating contingency plans when the sources of uncertainty ...

The Breath of Planet Earth: Atmospheric Circulation. Assimilation of Surface Wind Observations - Atlas, Robert
Differences in air pressure are a major cause of atmospheric circulation. Because heat excites the movement of atoms, warm temperatures cause, air molecules to expand. Because those molecules now occupy a larger space, the pressure that their weight exerts is decreased. Air from surrounding high-pressure areas is pushed toward the low-pressure areas, creating circulation. This process causes a major pattern of global atmosphere movement known as meridional circulation...
